This is the area located on the North Eastern elbow of Scotland to the east of the Scottish Highlands and to the north of Perthshire and Angus. The main city is of course Aberdeen, while its many golf courses include Royal Aberdeen, Cruden Bay, Murcar and Moray Old. The many attractions and places of interest include:

Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Aberdeen
Overlooking the city harbour, the museum presents the history of Aberdeen's shipping and fishing past. Using models, real equipment and computer displays, the exhibitions bring the North Sea experience to life and visitors can discover what it's like to live and work on a massive oil platform in the North Sea. Aberdeenshire Farming Museum, Mintlaw, Aberdeenshire
The museum offers an interpretation of 20th century estate life through an audiovisual programme, reconstructed houses and costumed guides. The region's farming life over 200 years is highlighted in the "Weel Vrocht Grun" (well worked ground) exhibition by use of dioramas, soundtrack and film. Phone: + 44 1771 622906

Archaeolink Prehistory Park, Oyne, Aberdeenshire
An interesting visitor centre, the indoor elements include a film presentation, which takes visitors on a journey through time to meet their ancestors, while outside, a series of reconstructions based on archaeological evidence from the area, form a path through Prehistory. Phone: + 44 1464 851500

Ballindalloch Castle
Ballindalloch Castle, Ballindalloch, Moray
Known as the Pearl of the North, Ballindalloch is one of the most beautiful castles in Scotland. Boasting a splendid setting, this is one of the few privately owned castles to have been lived in continuously by its original family. Phone + 44 1807 500206

Balmoral Castle, Ballater, Aberdeenshire
Balmoral has been the Scottish home of the Royal Family since 1852 and offers exhibitions in the castle itself, though many rooms are not open to the public. The formal gardens cover 3 acres and are worth a visit. Phone + 44 1339 742534

Balvenie Castle, Dufftown, Moray
Dating from the 13th century, this ruined courtyard castle was originally the seat of the Comyn family. Occupied by the Jacobites after the Battle of Killiecrankie in 1689, the castle fell into ruin after the Battle of Culloden in 1746. Banchory Museum, Banchory, Aberdeenshire

Braemar Highland Heritage Centre, Braemar, Aberdeenshire
Situated in the beautiful Highland village of Braemar, this heritage centre provides an informative journey through Braemar's tradition and history. Exhibits feature the Highland Gathering, Queen Victoria, Balmoral Castle and the history of the area. Phone: + 44 1339 741944

Brodie Castle
Brodie Castle, Forres, Moray
This fine 16th-century castle, damaged in an attack in 1645 by Montrose's army, contains fine furniture, porcelain and a major collection of paintings. The four acres of grounds are famous for their daffodils in spring. Phone + 44 1309 641371

Burghead Headland Visitor Centre, Burghead, Moray
The centre explores the history of Burghead from Pictish times to the present day and gives an insight into the possible origins of the Burning of the Clavie. The upper level affords unrivalled views of the Moray Firth and depending on your luck, you may catch sight of the Moray Firth Dolphins from here. Phone: + 44 1343 835518

Cardhu Distillery Visitor Centre, Aberlour, Moray
The home of Johnnie Walker Scotch Whiskey; the distillery was legally established by John Cumming in 1824, although illicit distilling took place before then. Located on the scenic B9102 route between Rothes and Grantown-on-Spey, the facility features an interesting exhibition and distillery shop. Phone: + 44 1340 872555

Castle Fraser, Inverurie, Aberdeenshire
The most elaborate Z-plan castle in Scotland, Castle Fraser was built between 1575 and 1636 and contains many Fraser family portraits and fine antique furnishings. The historic walled garden is another fine feature. Phone + 44 1330 833463

Crathes Castle, Banchory, Aberdeenshire
Built in the second half of the 16th century, the castle is a superb example of a tower house of the period. A visit to the castle is enhanced by the magnificent walled gardens, while the visitor centre's new exhibit "A Walk on the Wild Side", explores the wildlife on the Crathes Estate. Drum Castle & Gardens, Near Banchory, Aberdeenshire
The oldest intact building in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, Drum Castle was home to the Irvine family from 1323 to 1975. Combining a medieval keep, a Jacobean mansion house and a later Victorian extension, apart from touring the castle, visitors can also enjoy the superb gardens. Phone: + 44 1330 811204

Elgin Cathedral, Elgin, Moray
Dating back to the 13th century, Elgin Cathedral, even in ruin, is a beautiful and awe-inspiring place. Glenfiddich Distillery
Glenfiddich Distillery, Dufftown, Moray
It was Christmas Day 1887, when William Grant watched proudly as the first spirit ran from the stills at this now world famous distillery. Glenfiddich is unique in the fact that it is the only Highland Single Malt that is distilled, matured and bottled at its own distillery. Phone + 1340 820373

Glen Grant Distillery and Gardens, Near Aberlour, Moray
From the moment it was created in 1840, the clean distinctive taste and pale golden colour of Glen Grant have set it apart from other single malt Scotch whiskies. Glenlivet Distillery, Glenlivet, Moray
Situated on the B9008, just north of Tomintoul, the distillery was established in 1824 by George Smith. Apart from a complimentary dram of Glenlivet, visitors can enjoy an interactive presentation and guided tour of the distillery, where the famous spirit matures to a single malt whisky of infinite subtlety. Gordon Highlanders Museum, Viewfield Road, Aberdeen

Huntly Castle, Huntly, Aberdeenshire

Johnston's Cashmere Visitor Centre, Elgin, Moray
Founded in 1797, Johnston's mill in Elgin is the only British mill to transform cashmere from raw fibre to finished garment. The visitor centre offers mill tours and the opportunity to browse through the shop in the original mill buildings. Visitors can also enjoy some homemade baking in the coffee shop. Royal Lochnagar Distillery, Craithie, Aberdeenshire

Slains Castle
Slains Castle, Cruden Bay, Aberdeenshire
Cutting an imposing sight, Slains Castle was built in 1597 and today, is one of the most famous ruins in Scotland. One of the guests here was Bram Stoker and it is said that his visit was the inspiration behind his best-known work, Dracula. Access to the ruins is difficult but you are free to explore them.

Speyside Cooperage Visitor Centre, Craigellachie, Moray
Situated on the malt whisky trail, and featuring a working cooperage, visitors can watch skilled coopers at work, repairing oak casks for Whisky Industry. Phone: + 44 1340 871108

Spynie Palace, Elgin, Moray
Dominated by the massive 15th century tower and commanding spectacular views over Spynie Loch, this was the residence of the bishops of Moray from the 14th century to 1686. The Great Hall and David's Tower are not accessible but the beautiful surroundings make a visit well worthwhile. Phone: + 44 1343 546358

Strathisla Distillery, Keith, Moray
Established in 1786, this is the oldest operating distillery in the Highlands. With its distinctive pagodas, cobbled courtyard and picturesque buildings, Strathisla Distillery is arguably the most beautiful in Scotland. Visitors can take a self-guided tour through all stages of manufacture from the preparation of the malted barley to the copper pot stills that are the heart of the distillation process.
