Located on the western coast of Scotland, south of the Highlands and bordered to the east by Loch Lomond and Stirling, the Argyll region is geographically fragmented. Comprising the Kintyre Peninsula and main islands of Mull, Jura, Islay and Bute, much of Argyll is bordered by water. The main towns include Oban, Rothesay and Inveraray, while the countless smaller islands include Coll, Tiree, Iona, Colonsay, Ulva, Staffa, Scarba and many others.

Argyll Forest Park, Ardgartan, by Arrochar, Argyll and Bute

Ben Lomond, Rowardennan
Ben Lomond, Rowardennan, East Shore of Loch Lomond

Bowmore Distillery, Bowmore, Isle of Islay

Bute Museum, Rothesay, Isle of Bute

Campbeltown Heritage Centre, Campbeltown, Kintyre, Argyll
Displaying information and artefacts showing the history of Kintyre and its people, the exhibits at the centre include a working model of the former Campbeltown / Macrihanish light railway. Phone: + 44 1586 553173

Carnasserie Castle, Near Kilmartin, Argyll
Built between 1565 and 1572 for John Carswell, who became Bishop of Argyll and the Isles during the time of Mary Queen of Scots, the fairly well preserved remains feature stone carvings and a magnificent fireplace. Phone: + 44 131 668 8800

Castle House Museum, Dunoon, Argyll
Built as in 1824 for Lord Provost Ewing of Glasgow, the museum tells the story of Dunoon and district through various displays. Phone: + 44 1369 701422

Castle Sween, Near Tarbert, Kintyre, Argyll
Located on the South Eastern shores of Loch Sween, this is one of the oldest castles in Scotland. The remains date back to the 12th century, with various additions made over the following few centuries. Phone: + 44 131 668 8800

Colonsay House Gardens, Isle of Colonsay, Argyll

Duart Castle
Duart Castle, Near Craignure, Isle of Mull, Argyll
The ancient home of the Chief of Clan MacLean, Duart Castle stands on a cliff-top overlooking the Sound of Mull. Best accessed via ferry from Oban, visitors can see the 14th century keep and dungeons, and learn about the castle and MacLean families over the last 600 years. Phone: + 44 1680 812309

Dunstaffnage Castle & Chapel, Near Oban, Argyll
Built on a huge rock around 1275 by the Lords of Lorn, the castle was captured in 1309 by Robert Bruce. The architecturally impressive chapel was constructed outside the castle walls and today the ruins remain impressive. Phone: + 44 1631 562465

Inveraray Castle, Inveraray, Argyll
This impressive 18th century castle is home to the Duke and Duchess of Argyll of the Clan Campbell. The contents include fine furniture, artwork, tapestries and a collection of armour. Phone: + 44 1499 302203

Inveraray Jail, Inveraray, Argyll
Since opening in 1989, this has become one of Scotland's most exciting heritage attractions. Visit the restored 1820 Courtroom where you can listen to excerpts of past trials and then continue to the prisons below, where you meet with the Warder, Matron and Prison Guides, all dressed in period costumes. Iona Abbey and Nunnery, Isle of Iona, Argyll
Founded by St Columba in 563 AD, the abbey and island have been places of pilgrimage since. Visitors can admire the restored abbey and buildings, which contain a collection of medieval carved stones. Iona Heritage Centre, Isle of Iona, Argyll

Isle of Mull Museum, Tobermory, Isle of Mull, Argyll
This small museum is crammed with interesting objects and displays of island life, including fossils, standing stones and Spanish Galleon. Phone: + 44 1688 302603 
 
Kilchurn Castle, Loch Awe, Dalmally, Argyll
Originally the property of the MacGregor clan, these picturesque ruins date from the 15th century and are set on a peninsula in Loch Awe. A ferry transports passengers to the island and leaves from Loch Awe Pier. Phone: + 44 1866 833333

Kilmartin Glen, Kilmartin, Argyll
This ancient Kingdom of the Scots boasts a history going back some 5,000 years. The region is littered with a multitude of Cairns, standing stones, stone circles, forts and castles. Phone: + 44 1546 510278

Kilmartin House Museum, Kilmartin, Argyll
The Kilmartin Valley's extraordinary concentration and diversity of ancient monuments is celebrated at this archaeological museum. Reconstructions, interactive models and unique recordings of Prehistoric music augment a fine collection of artefacts from nearby sites. Phone: + 44 1546 510278

Lagavulin Distillery, Near Port Ellen, Isle of Islay
Established in 1816, the distillery occupies a site of six acres and enjoys superb views towards Lagavulin Bay and the ruins of Dunyveg Castle. Visitors can take a guided tour but must book in advance. Phone: + 44 1496 302400

Loch Lomond Shores, Ben Lomond Way, Balloch

Mount Stuart House & Gardens, Near Rothesay, Isle of Bute

Oban Distillery Visitor Centre
, Oban, Argyll
Dating back to around 1800, this is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland. It was refurbished in the 1890's but has remained relatively unchanged since. Old Byre Heritage Centre, Dervaig, Isle of Mull, Argyle
Tucked away in lovely Glen Bellart, near the village of Dervaig, this is a must for anyone who wants to absorb the history of Mull through an exhibition of Mull's flora and wildlife, with 25 models giving the history of Mull. Phone: + 44 1688 400229

Rothesay Castle
Rothesay Castle, Rothesay, Isle of Bute
Attacked by Vikings in its earlier days, this was a favourite residence of the Stewart Kings and remains a wonderful example of a 13th century circular castle of enclosure. The Great Hall and dungeons are accessed by steep stairs. Phone: + 44 1700 502691 
 
Scottish Sealife & Marine Sanctuary, Barcaldine, Near Oban, Argyll
The centre provides an interactive experience with native marine life, including starfish, stingrays, octopuses and seals.
