ACCOMMODATION REVIEW
Boasting a magnificent location opposite Royal Troon, Piersland Lodge, as it was known, was built in 1899 by renowned Scottish architect, William Leiper as the home for Sir Alexander Walker, grandson of the Johnnie Walker of Scotch whiskey fame. Now a Grade A Listed Building, all the original features remain, including wood panelling, stone fireplaces, wood carvings and a Jacobean embroidery frieze worked by the Tapestrière to King George V. Having remained in the Walker family until 1956, Piersland House is now a leading country house hotel.
Set in almost two acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, including an oriental garden, Piersland House Hotel overlooks Royal Troon Golf Club, which has hosted no less than eight British Open Championships, most recently in July 2004 and also in 1997, when Justin Leonard captured the Claret Jug. Piersland House offers a choice of dining and guests can either choose to sample the award-winning Brasserie Restaurant or opt for something lighter in the less formal bar area.
There are 30 en-suite guestrooms at Piersland House Hotel and somewhat appropriately given the origins of the house, each bedroom is based upon a malt whiskey distillery or family. There is also a good choice of rooms here and guests can choose from the 15 cottage suites located in the main grounds or go for one of the standard or larger superior rooms in the house itself. And though all the rooms retain an original charm, each one is equipped with good room amenities from tea and coffee making facilities and mini-bar to trouser press and hairdryer.
