ACCOMMODATION REVIEW
Situated just south of Dornoch in the town of Tain, Mansfield House Hotel is an excellent four-star country house hotel, dating back to the 1870's but substantially extended in 1902 by the then Provost of Tain. The house retains many of its fine original features, including a wealth of pine panelling and ornate plaster ceilings but another original feature it claims to retain is the ghost of one Mrs Johanna Fowler, the much-loved wife of the Provost, who purchased the house in 1892. Never fear though because Mrs Fowler is as friendly and welcoming as the hotel itself.
The public areas and bedrooms have all been extensively refurbished, with the rooms in the Victorian part of the house offering that little bit more in terms of deluxe furnishings. Owned and run by the Lauritsen Family, Mansfield House is renowned as being a friendly establishment and this is reflected in the attitude of their staff. The restaurant, where David Lauritsen is executive chef, has won numerous awards for the quality of its cuisine and the emphasis is on fresh, local produce, cooked with a distinctive Scottish flavour.
No traditional Scottish hotel is complete without a well-stocked bar and the bar at Mansfield House does not disappoint, with more than 80 malt whiskies and a range of ales to choose from. And if you are in any way predisposed towards excellent malt whiskies, it's very easy to develop an even greater interest while in Scotland. The nearby Glenmorangie Distillery has an excellent visitor's centre and provides guided tours and whisky tasting. With Tain, Brora, Golspie and Royal Dornoch all within 40 minutes drive, Mansfield House is ideal for the golfer but as a base to explore the Highlands, it's also a great option.
