ACCOMMODATION REVIEW
Service, hospitality and cuisine are big at Culloden House and guests generally feel like they are staying in a private home rather than a hotel. Offering country house living at its finest and set in forty acres of private grounds, the four-star Culloden House dates back to 1788 and stands on the original site of Culloden Castle, which was destroyed by fire in 1758. The main frame of the house is all that remains of the original castle, while the two wings were constructed using the original stone from the damaged castle walls.
Quite apart from its reputation today as an excellent country house hotel, Culloden House is also renowned for its connection to the Battle of Culloden in 1746 and one Bonnie Prince Charlie, who requisitioned the castle as his headquarters for that fateful battle. The young pretender had returned to Scotland to reclaim the throne and after many battles with the English south of the border, he retreated to Inverness to prepare for what was to prove his final stand. On the morning of April 16th 1746, Bonnie Prince Charlie headed for the moor and the bloodbath that followed at the Battle of Culloden was to change the course of Highland history for the next 150 years.
The public rooms at Culloden House boast chandeliers, marble fireplaces, ornate plasterwork and antiques, while its bedrooms are individually decorated and uphold the character of the house. The bedrooms range from opulent period suites and master rooms to contemporary standard rooms, while each is en-suite and equipped with all the expected facilities. The refined restaurant at the hotel offers an ever-changing five-course menu, prepared by Master Chef Michael Simpson using the finest Scottish produce, while to accompany the fine cuisine, guests may choose from over 120 wines and 30 malt whiskies. And having played some of the world's finest golf courses, Inverness is the ideal base from which to explore the incredible beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
